10K training with friends: a goal that fits busy lives
Training for a 10K with friends: why it’s a great group goal, how to share a plan at different paces, the sessions worth doing together, and picking a race.
A 10K is a great group goal. It’s a real step up from 5K, but training fits around work and family, and the race is over before lunch. Here’s how to work towards one together.
Why 10K works for groups
- Reachable for most people who already run a little.
- Shorter weekly runs than half marathon training.
- Plenty of local races through the year.
Pick a race and a plan
Choose a race far enough away for everyone to build up from where they are, and one plan you all follow. If someone is starting from zero, aim for a 5K first. See a first 5K with friends.
Sessions to do together
- The weekly long run, at a chatty pace.
- Hill repeats: everyone runs up at their own effort and regroups at the bottom.
- Easy runs end to end on a short loop, so different paces meet often.
Stay on track
Share your runs with each other through the week, and agree that a missed session is no big deal. A shared target like “everyone runs three times this week” keeps it social. See running challenge ideas.
