What is conversational pace? The talk test for easy runs

Conversational pace means running slowly enough to talk in full sentences. How to find it, why easy runs matter, and why it suits running with friends.

Conversational pace is the speed at which you can run and still talk in full sentences. It’s the pace most training plans mean when they say “easy run”, and it’s the natural pace for running with friends.

The talk test

Try saying a full sentence out loud. If you can, comfortably, you’re at conversational pace. If you can only manage a few words between breaths, slow down. If you could sing, you could probably go a little faster.

It’s slower than you think

Many runners run their easy days too fast. Conversational pace can feel almost too slow at first, especially if you’re used to pushing every run. That’s fine: it’s supposed to feel easy.

Why easy runs matter

Training plans mix easy runs with a smaller number of harder sessions. Easy runs let you build up distance while leaving energy for the hard days. Running everything hard tends to leave you tired.

The pace for running together

If you run with friends at different levels, conversational pace for the slower runner is the right group pace. Everyone can talk, and nobody is racing. See running with someone faster or slower.

How RunPack helps

RunPack’s morning check-in suggests when to keep the day easy, in plain words, based on your sleep, how you feel and your recent training. See how hard should I run today? and how the score works.

RunPack is a training tool, not a medical device. If running feels wrong, stop and see a doctor.
