Couch to 5K with friends: doing a beginner plan together
How to do a couch to 5K plan with friends: picking a plan, the same week at your own pace, run/walk sessions together, and what to do when someone falls behind.
“Couch to 5K” plans take you from not running to running 5 km over several weeks, using short run/walk sessions that slowly get longer. They work even better with friends: you start together, and nobody quietly gives up in week four.
Pick one plan
There are many free couch to 5K plans and apps. It matters less which you choose than that you all follow the same one, so you’re on the same week and can compare notes.
Same week, own pace
The plan sets the run and walk intervals; each person runs them at whatever pace they can talk at. If you run together, keep to the slowest person’s pace, and do the walk breaks together too.
Run together when you can
- One shared session a week is plenty; do the others when they fit.
- A flat loop makes run/walk intervals easy to follow as a group.
- Finish with something nice: coffee, breakfast, a stretch in the park.
When someone falls behind
Plans are guides, not tests. If a week felt too hard, repeat it. If someone misses a week through illness or holiday, they can rejoin a week or two back. The group goal is that everyone gets there, not that everyone gets there on the same day.

How RunPack helps
Each session you record (with just your iPhone, or a watch) appears in your crew’s private feed, so everyone sees who’s done this week’s runs and can send a 🔥. Free for crews of up to 4. See the free run tracker and how a crew works.
If you have a health condition or haven’t exercised in a long time, check with a doctor before starting.
