Your first run club: what to expect and how to prepare
Nervous about your first run club? What usually happens, how fast groups go, what to bring, and what to ask, so you turn up feeling ready.
Joining a run club for the first time can feel daunting. Will you be too slow? Will everyone know each other? In practice, most clubs are friendly and used to newcomers. Here’s what usually happens.
Before you go
- Check the pace groups. Many clubs list them, or say “all paces welcome”.
- Message the organiser to say you’re coming. They’ll look out for you.
- Check the distance so you know what you’re signing up for.
What usually happens
People gather a few minutes before the start, someone explains the route, and groups set off by pace. Good clubs make sure nobody runs alone at the back, with a regroup at corners or a back marker.
What to bring
- Your phone or watch, and a light if it’s dark.
- A layer for afterwards.
- Water if it’s a long or warm run.
If you’re slower than everyone
Say so at the start, and ask which group suits you. Most runners remember being new and are happy to slow down. More in group run etiquette.
Afterwards
Stay for the coffee if there is one. That’s where you get to know people, and where friendships turn into a crew.
How RunPack helps
Many clubs and crews keep in touch between meetups. With RunPack, the group shares runs in a private feed only members see, joined by code or link. See RunPack for running clubs.
