How to make running a habit (with a little help from friends)
Practical ways to run consistently: a fixed time, a minimum run, a plan for bad days, and how friends make it much harder to skip.
Most people don’t stop running because it’s too hard. They stop because life gets busy and one missed week turns into three. Consistency comes from making running easy to start and hard to skip.
Give it a fixed slot
“I’ll run when I have time” rarely happens. “Tuesday and Thursday before work, Sunday morning long run” does. Put it in your calendar like a meeting.
Set a minimum run
Decide the smallest run that still counts, say 15 minutes. On a bad day you do the minimum. It keeps the habit alive, and you’ll often keep going once you’re out.
Make starting easy
- Lay your kit out the night before.
- Same route on busy days, so there’s nothing to plan.
- Run from home or work rather than driving somewhere first.
Plan for missed runs
You will miss some. The rule that matters is “never miss twice”: after a missed run, the next one is the priority, not making up the lost distance.
Bring in friends
It’s far harder to skip a run when someone’s waiting, or when your friends will see you didn’t go. Even friends who run at different times help when you can all see each other’s runs. More in finding a running accountability partner.
How RunPack helps
RunPack puts your crew’s runs in one private feed, so you see when friends have been out, and they see you. Plus crews can also set a shared crew goal. Free for crews of up to 4, on iPhone. See how a crew works.
