Pace alerts: how to run at a target pace with your iPhone
Set a target pace and RunPack buzzes and shows “Speed up” or “Ease off” when you drift, even with the phone in your pocket and the screen locked. No watch needed.
Holding a pace is hard without looking at your wrist every minute. With only a phone it’s harder still. RunPack 1.1 adds pace alerts: a buzz and a message when you drift, so you can keep the phone in your pocket.
Set it up
- On the Run tab, pick the kind of run: Easy, Tempo, Long run, Intervals or Race.
- Tap Set a target pace and choose a pace per kilometre or mile.
- Start the run. You can lock the phone.
What you’ll feel and see
If your pace over the last 30 seconds is more than 15 seconds per kilometre slower than the target, your phone buzzes and shows “Speed up” with your current pace: on the run screen if it’s open, or as a silent notification if the phone is locked. If you’re that much faster, it shows “Ease off”. It waits for the first 400 metres while your pace settles, and alerts at most once a minute, so it never nags. Your music keeps playing.
Which pace to choose
- Easy runs: a pace where you can talk in full sentences. The alert is most useful here — it stops you creeping faster.
- Tempo runs: comfortably hard, the pace you could hold for about an hour in a race.
- Long runs: your easy pace or a little slower.
Afterwards, your splits show how close you stayed.
