Running with your partner: how to make it work for both of you
Running as a couple: handling different paces, sharing goals, splitting childcare for runs, and keeping it fun rather than a competition.
Running with your partner can be the best part of the week, or a reliable source of arguments about pace. A few simple agreements make the difference.
Agree what kind of run it is
Is this a together run, where you stay side by side, or a same-time run, where you each go your own pace and meet at the end? Decide before you leave the house.
Handle the pace gap
On together runs, the faster runner runs at the slower one’s pace and treats it as an easy run. Want more? Loop back or add a lap at the end. More ideas in running with someone faster or slower.
Don’t coach unless asked
Unrequested tips on form or pace rarely land well mid-run. Save them, or better, skip them.
When you have kids
- Take turns: one runs while the other has the kids, then swap.
- Running buggy runs on smooth paths for a run together.
- Same route, staggered starts, and meet for a family walk after.
Share goals, keep your own numbers
Train for the same race, or set a weekly challenge where you both have your own target. Here’s how to make it fair. Cheer each other’s finishes rather than comparing times.
How RunPack helps
A RunPack crew can be just the two of you, or you plus a few friends. Each run you do, together or apart, lands in a private feed only the crew sees, with one-tap reactions. Free for up to 4 people on iPhone. See how a crew works.
