Questions about calories and running

How many calories does running burn?

About 1 calorie per kilogram of body weight per kilometre. A 70 kg runner burns roughly 70 calories a kilometre, or about 350 calories in a 5K.

Does running faster burn more calories?

Per kilometre, not much: the energy cost of covering a distance on foot depends mostly on body weight and distance. Running faster burns more per minute, but you finish sooner.

How accurate is this?

It is an estimate. Hills, wind, running form and fitness all change the real number, and so does the device measuring it. Use it to compare runs, not to count to the last calorie.

Do I burn more running than walking the same distance?

Yes, running a kilometre costs more than walking it, though the gap is smaller than many people expect, and it depends on walking speed.
