Running club ideas: 20 social runs your crew will love
Fresh ideas for your running club or crew: themed runs, new routes, brunch runs, scavenger runs, relays, track nights and challenges that suit every pace.
The same Tuesday loop gets old. A different kind of run every few weeks keeps a group interested, brings back people who drifted off, and is a good excuse to invite new ones. Here are twenty ideas that work for mixed paces.
Food and drink
- Brunch run: finish at a café and eat together.
- Bakery run: a route that passes the best bakery in town.
- Coffee crawl: short loops between two or three cafés.
- Picnic run: one person brings the food to the park at the end.
New places
- Mystery route: one person plans it and nobody else knows where it goes.
- Trail day: drive or take a train somewhere off-road.
- Landmarks run: hit five spots in town and take a photo at each.
- Point-to-point: take a bus or train out, run home.
- Sunrise run: meet before dawn, watch it come up.
Games
- Scavenger run: a list of things to spot or photograph in teams.
- Prediction run: everyone guesses their time without a watch; closest guess wins bragging rights.
- Relay: teams split a distance between them.
- Handicap run: slower runners start first; everyone aims to finish together.
Training with a twist
- Track night: easy intervals on a track, everyone at their own pace.
- Hill session: repeats on a hill where the group stays in sight.
- Pacing practice: take turns leading at an agreed pace.
Seasonal and charity
- Fancy dress run for holidays.
- Lights run in winter: headtorches and reflective kit.
- Charity run: pick a local cause and run for it together.
- Race day: enter the same local race and cheer each other in.
Between the events
Events are the highlights. The everyday runs in between are what keep a crew together. A weekly challenge set from each person’s own running gives everyone something to aim for, whatever their pace. RunPack’s next version sets one for your crew automatically every Monday, free. Want a name to go with the group? See running crew names.
